Chris Brubeck’s guitar-centered Affinity “jumps out of the starting gate with the energy of a downhill ski race,” then glides across genres from ragtime to waltz to samba and beyond. This globe-spanning concerto was specifically written for guitar virtuoso and Festival guest artist Sharon Isbin, whom Atlanta Journal has called “the Monet of the classical guitar.” Isbin also performs Rodrigo’s popular Concierto de Aranjuez; Rodrigo hid within its melody “…the perfume of magnolias, the song of birds, and the whisper of fountains…” The program opens with the colorful “Alborada del gracioso” from Ravel’s Mirrors and concludes with a collection of audience favorites by Copland.
