Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence

July 21, 2026 | 7:30 pm America/Denver
The Robert Mann Chamber Music Series continues with a world premiere by “astonishingly innovative” composer James Stephenson (Musical America); while he writes deftly “in all walks of the musical landscape,” his new quartet features trumpet and strings. Following intermission, Tchaikovsky remembers Italy — by way of Russia, of course — in an irresistible sextet for strings, his final contribution to chamber music.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Souvenir de Florence

Composer James Stephenson’s music has been described as “astonishingly inventive” (Musical America). Foremost in his style is the ability to create music that resonates with musicians and audiences alike. Since becoming a full-time composer in 2007, he has enjoyed premieres in all walks of the musical landscape, including The Chicago Symphony (Muti), San Francisco Ballet, Boston Pops, and “The President’s Own” US Marine Band. The latter premiered his “Fanfare for Democracy” at the Inauguration of President Joe Biden. Stephenson’s works have been premiered by major ensembles including the Minnesota Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony, and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music. His one-act opera Cåraboo premiered in 2023, marking his first opera, and his catalog includes four symphonies, his Second performed over 50 times worldwide along with concertos and sonatas for nearly every instrument, with upcoming projects including his Fifth Symphony and a new ballet for The Joffrey Ballet, all shaped by a strong focus on storytelling through works like Once Upon a Symphony, performed nearly 400 times globally.

Jeffrey Work joined the Oregon Symphony as Principal Trumpet in the Fall of 2006, following 13 years as an active freelance musician in the Boston area. Since 1999, he has also served as Principal Trumpet of the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder. As an orchestral musician, Jeff can be heard on several recordings, most notably as a featured performer on the Oregon Symphony’s acclaimed 2011 release, Music for a Time of War. In addition to his orchestral duties in Portland and Boulder, Jeffrey Work performs concerto and chamber repertoire as his busy schedule will allow.
