Louis DeMartino

Currently Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the University of Oregon, Staten Island native Louis DeMartino also serves as the principal clarinetist of the Salem Chamber Orchestra, Eugene’s Orchestra NEXT, principal of the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder, and bass clarinetist of the Artosphere Festival Orchestra in Fayetteville, AR.
Louis has performed with the Oregon Symphony, Vancouver (BC) Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops Orchestra, Houston Symphony Orchestra, Houston Grand Opera, and Omaha Symphony. His recording credits include the Kansas City Symphony’s Miraculous Metamorphosis, Pink Martini and the Von Trapps’ Dream a Little Dream, Charles Nichols’ Multiplication of Machines, and an upcoming recording of chamber works by David Crumb. Louis is also an active proponent of new music and he performs with Northwest New Music, Fear No Music, and Third Angle Ensemble in the Portland area. He also performed on the Chicago Symphony’s MusicNOW series. Louis was a member of the New World Symphony for three seasons and he was a member of the Chicago Civic Orchestra for one season. In addition, he performed for one year as the 2nd clarinetist of Orchestra Iowa in Cedar Rapids. In the past, Louis was a fellow with the Tanglewood Music Center and he was also a member of the New Fromm Players, a contemporary music ensemble in residence at Tanglewood. Other festivals include Spoleto USA (Charleston) and the AIMS Orchestra in Graz, Austria. Louis studied at the New England Conservatory with Craig Nordstrom where he received his Bachelor of Music in performance. He received his Master of Music from Rice University where he studied with Michael Webster. He also studied with Lawrie Bloom at Northwestern University. He has recently presented masterclasses at the University of Montana, University of South Florida, and San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
