Himari Plays Sibelius + Tchaikovsky 5

July 10, 2026 | 6:30 pm America/Denver
The 2026 Festival opens with a once-in-a-generation violinist: HIMARI, a 14-year-old phenomenon who has already collected substantial awards and recognition, performs Sibelius’ Concerto for Violin, full of Nordic snow and moody skies. Just as Sibelius invokes his native Finland, Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Fifth Symphony is infused with Russian colors. Composer Carter Pann also unveils a brand new piece of music to celebrate the start of the Festival season, written as a tribute to long-time Festival supporter Ralph “Chris” Christoffersen.

Born in 2011 in Japan, HIMARI has been described as a “once-in-a-generation talent,” captivating the global classical music scene with her exceptional technique, imaginative interpretations, and remarkable depth of expression. In March 2025, she made her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker in a subscription concert, becoming the youngest Asian soloist ever to appear with the orchestra. She began playing violin at age three and performed with a professional orchestra by six. In 2022, she became the youngest student admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studies with Ida Kavafian. HIMARI has won top prizes, including the Lipiński & Wieniawski (Grand Prix) and Arthur Grumiaux International Violin Competitions. In 2019, she became the youngest performer at the Salzburg Festival, and in 2023, won the Public Award at Mini Violini in Montreal. She has appeared with major orchestras worldwide, including the Berliner Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Composer/pianist Carter Pann resides in the forest just north of Lyons, Colorado and is the chair of the composition department at CU Boulder’s College of Music. He founded and conducts the Emerging Composer Project, an ongoing opportunity for young, local composers to receive premiere performances and recordings of their works by Boulder Philharmonic musicians. He also conducts the Boulder Altitude Directive ensemble with a mission to premiere and record the new works of students on CU’s campus with the College’s best players. He has written for and worked with musicians around the world, with performances by the London Symphony and City of Birmingham Symphony, the Tchaikovsky Symphony in Moscow, many radio symphonies around Europe, the Seattle Symphony, National Repertory Orchestra, the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, the Youth Orchestras of New York and Chicago, and countless wind ensembles.
